I have heard people talking about making voting mandatory - such as automatically making everyone register at 18. Seriously is this even an option in this country? In a free society is it right to force people to the polls?

No, people have the right to abstain.

I think if people don't care enough to vote we are probably better off without their input. Besides it strikes me as fundamentally wrong to force people to participate in the political system. I always tell people they really ought to vote, it buys you the right to complain about the government if nothing else.

Mandatory voting is an utterly absurd idea. Since when do we force people in a free society to vote? Do we really want a bunch of crack heads that are to lazy to go to the polls picking our leaders?
