I believe it's on a state by state basis

In my state, you can be 15 with parental consent, 16 without.
3 :
Fourteen for a paper route.

I do believe that you are at an employable age. However it does depend on the type of job you're going for...kitchen work (?) or waitessing (?).You'll have to obtain working papers from your school dept. though...and getting those will depend on your grades.

in every state it is legal to be gainfully employed in non-hazardous jobs. this site has all the details you need including work permits(Minnesota does NOT require a permit) hours you can work, jobs you can do etcetera. there are links for parents, employers, educators and TEENS. http://www.youthrules.dol.gov US Department of Labor YouthRules! OR http://www.doli.state.mn.us/childlbr.html#Minimum%20age Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry it is legal to be employed at 14 in every state however............. due to the poor job market it is extremely difficult to get hired. the hours that those between 14 and 15 are allowed to work are limited and many employers can not or will not work within those parameters. the best bet for employment is food service and grocery stores albeit it is legal to work in most any job that is not considered hazardous by the US Department of Labor or the State's Department of Labor. many employers have had bad experiences employing minors due to poor attendance, poor work-ethic, immaturity, frequent schedule request etcetera so many just won't deal with the problems. there is now the added pressure of jobs that used to be in the realm of teens and retirees being taken by adults trying to support their families. SO if you want to find a job you must be able, through your words and actions, to show that you are mature, dependable, punctual, trainable and a team player. you will need glowing references from teachers, clergy, coaches, friends parents, people you have done casual labor for or places you have volunteered.
