The 1950s was a time when many Americans were terrified of communism (because of Russia and China). They were afraid that these countries would send spies to infiltrate the government. People suspected of being communists were arrested frequently. The Rosenburgs were even executed because it was believed that they were communist spies. Joseph McCarthy took advantage of these fears. He knew that if someone was accused of being a communist, their life was basically over because everyone would suspect them of espionage or treason. So every time he disapproved of someone, he would call them a communist. Many politicians and entertainers had their careers destroyed because McCarthy accused them of communism.

Your teacher wants you to say that paranoia about communists allowed mccarthy to recklessly accuse housewives of being communists. You should say that. It isnt true. Joe Mccarthy was worried that a large amount of soviet spies were working for the US government. He was one of the only people who thought this was the case. He was right. Declassified soviet documents show that many top officials in the government and the millitary were soviet spies. It would be as if colin powell, paul wolfowitz, treasury secretary paulson and several others were all working for the communists. President Harry Trumans official policy was to employ soviet spies so that the soviets would like us better. It drove McCarthy nuts. He enjoyed 80% approval ratings during most of his career. At his death, he still had most people in the country behind him. He did not assuse anyone of being a spy. He only said that members of the communist party should not be working in sensitive positions, such as in code rooms for the army. He pointed out that the president purposely employed known soviet spies. McCarthy was the countrys youngest federal judge. He completed grades K-12 in three years. He was a respected legal scholar and an influential senator. Liberal media has distorted this great american patriot into a raving godzilla who accused everyone of being a communists, but it is a provable lie. The hollywood writers were not accused by Mc Carthy, they were accused by republicans in the house. McCarthy was in the senate, not the house. The hollywood writers were guilty. They were being paid by the russians to make pro-soviet movies. This has been proven by declassified trans-pacific telegraphs. There were probably thousands of soviet spies in the U.S. government. The Verona declassified documents have confirmed 300, and most of them are still secret. We have only cracked the code of a tiny percentage of them, and the russians arent talking. The rosenbergs were proven guilty beyond all doubt of giving the atom bomb to the soviets. Spy Alger Hiss was convicted during this period of being a soviet agent working as an aid to the president. The UN was his idea. The UN gives the soviet union as much power as the US, even though everyone knows they are huge A-holes. Coincidence? The number 2 man in the CIA was a soviet agent. Stalin knew about the atom bomb before our president did. This was not just a "climate of fear," but a serious problem. The soviets were giving money and arms to the North Koreans while we were at war with them. They knew all of our military secrets and grew stronger because of them. Their agents purposely made decisions that would harm america. Soviet spies were active in journalism. The popular I.F. Stone was celebrated by liberals and won many awards in journalism until he was found to be a soviet spy. Consider that he was not distinguishable from his fellow liberals.
