Can a Canadian police officer transfer to work in the United States

Can a Canadian police officer transfer to work in the United States?
If so, what visa is required? What is the process? We have been told from an unreliable source that the agency you apply to work with will handle all necessary visa/paperwork. But all American police department web sites that I have been on, say that they require American citizenship.

Each police department has its own rules and is under a different set of state and local laws. In any case, a police department would be quite hesitant to hire someone who has previously worked under the laws of a completely different country. You wouldn't be able to transfer, but you might, with hard work and time, be able to join one.

I am afraid not. Both countries habe separate laws which governs the employment of policemen/women

The above answer is correct, also you would have to go through a local police academy regardless. So you probably should be looking at their websites and not the Law Enforcement sites.

The only big city police department that I've found that hires legal permanent residents is the Los Angeles PD. A Canadian citizen who had a green card could be hired by that department, or any other department that hires both legal permenent residents and U.S. citizens. Individual police department websites will tell you if they hire immigrants. I checked out a few, and 4 out or 5 only hired U.S. citizens.

then if they require american citizenship - then you need to find another category to emigrate under. Wait until you qualify for citizenship - and then he can change jobs. Its like the customs and immigrations here in Canada - you are required to be a Canadian citizen to apply for those jobs. And most other Canadian government jobs as well - for security clearance reasons.
