How has volunteer work in The United States changed over time?

There was a time when volunteering was seen as something one did only out of the goodness of someone's heart. Now, it's accepted that people volunteer for a variety of reasons: to build up their CV, to learn about career options, to find out what a particular nonprofit really does, to make friends, to rebuild their own self-esteem, and on and on. The old paradigm of why to involve volunteers is -- we have all this work to do and we can't hire enough staff to do it, let's get some people to do it for free. The current paradigm is: some tasks are best done by volunteers, even if we have money to pay staff. More at the URLs below:
