My girlfriend is Canadian and I am American. What does she need to apply for to be able to legally live and work in the states? Would there be any reason she would be denied?

Probably if she has a criminal backround she might be denied. She needs to apply for residency status, a green card can get you to live and work but you want to strive for permanent residency or citizenship since a green card can expire. If you get married to her that would speed up the process a bit, and I also recommend getting a lawyer to help you guys process the paperwork.

As of now she can work on TN visa. Which you can get the Border by showing the offer letter. But Oncve you get married and apply for Green card she can apply for EAD and work. Once she apply for Green card she cannot use the TN visa also cannot travel to US without a document call advance parole,
